          Fan Di’an
          Director of China National Gallery

An art history is very often depicted as a process of a great variety of new art forms emerging endlessly and replacing the old ones. In China, although the art in the last two decades of the 20th-century had not been faded into the shelf of history, it did have experienced huge changes, just like what had happened in this country in the political system and economic patterns, in the societal model and the ways of living. The changes in the art during this period of time was also radical, which was very similar to a condensation of a period of history in such a short period of time, the“reality”of art was mainly composed of the simultaneous recurrence of all kinds of art history. The acceptance of western heterogeneous cultures and the recurrence of one’s own culture and traditions in China interweaved together, which had generated much diversified art concepts and expressions. As a result, it had led to a miraculous vision of China’s contemporary art.

It is fortunate for Chinese artists who live in an era as such. They have experienced the great changes in social reality, can enjoy the openness of a society and information convenience of a new era, therefore, they may use all kinds of artistic resources free for art making. But in the meanwhile, they face challenges as well, because it is very easy for them to get lost by the cultural products out of history or reality. The influence from history may easily trap one into the swirl of the traditional art and make one a successor of some style of art, the cultures of the real world is just like a river.

This river may lead artists to a confused mental state. Therefore, it has become a touchstone for assessing Chinese artists’ cultural knowledge as well as artistic courage and insights that how to choose and get what one needs to nurture his or her own art making, in the same time, how to focus on one’s own art expression. Before the Renaissance period when European artists were not regarded as humanists, some Chinese artists in ancient China had already been called as the artists of humanism. It was believed that if an artist were first an intellectual, he or she should be able to judge clearly a value system facing history and reality. The motion of an artist’s work should not be for the objective recurrence or reflection of what is before the artist, but should be for expressing his feeling in his heart. Consequently, the image in the work should be endowed with certain spiritual intentions and connotations of the author. If this kind of standards were applied to evaluate Chinese contemporary artists, Chao Ge, a professor of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, could be regarded as a representative in terms of the artist of humanism.

Chao Ge started to study art in the beginning of 1980s, when China opened its door to the outside world. Just like the common experiences Chinese artists of this generation have got in their process of grow-up, Chao Ge needed to solve problems in two aspects related to his art making, namely, technique and content. After he selected oil media as his expression, unlike Chinese oil painters including some of his teachers as a generation, who only accepted the influences from the former Soviet Union’s artists and the 19th-century European impressionists, Chao Ge paid more attention to the master works by artists of the Renaissance period, in which he began to study the painting techniques as his origin of expression. In order to support his selection to override the cultural constrains of those days, he and his classmates put forward a slogan titled “Learning from Great Masters”.

In an era when art all over China was revived from the political autarchy of the“Cultural Revolution”and came into a more liberal period of cultural policies, this slogan without any doubt signified the new ideals Chao Ge and his generation of artists hoped for. While studying the masterworks by western masters, Chao Ge was indulged in the styles of Sandro Botticelli from the earlier Renaissance period and of Albrecht Durer, a northern European artist and others. In many of his portraits created during that period, an interpretation and analysis of the figure is presented together with moderate color and clear outline to depict the figure, through which the social identity of the portrayed figure is identified clearly. His work in that period has created a popular trend titled“New Realism”in China’s art circle, through which he had established a unique expression as his earlier style.

Chao Ge is a Mongol, born in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China. His name means“fire”in Mongolian. His national background and living experiences in the grassland has formed his personalities as a silent speaker and an emotional artist. He has also got a characteristic as to touch upon the essence of a matter rather than its surface. The wide and natural landscape of the Mongolian Grassland has endowed him with an open mind, a poetic sense of enthusiasm and idealistic longing for the nature of beauty. Having moved to a metropolitan city for study or for living, his thought and emotion showed an instinct of rationality with a hope to transcend realities. Thus, his depiction of objects is characterized as a representation of essence into simplicity. In fact, this kind of pursuit is also meant to demonstrate his utmost concern of the theme“humanism”in his art. He once said:“I feel that contemplation on human beings by themselves in a true and original sense is just like thinking of a creature in desolation and isolation in a bone-dry desert. This world has stepped into a materialistic one rapidly. I think that art should be able to explore upon human’s spiritual life, to touch upon those spiritual and emotional conflicts on root. Only in this way, the best art work of the time could be created.”

Each artist has had his or her own understanding and pursuit for the“best art work”. Chao Ge’s artistic experiences are a process of his in-depth exploration of what painting meant to be, which also showcases responsibilities of a scholarly artist. His viewpoints on art could be concluded as a “social psychological” type. In my regard, what he intended is to evoke a relationship between painting and“a spiritual world, a mental life and behavior, and a social existence in a true sense”. In the 1980s, he selected Mongols as his subject matter, created works titled “The Herdsman’s Son”,“Dressing Up”and some others. with a certain type of one nationality’s image, those works have presented its people’s characteristics as simple and ordinary. In depicting the figure’s psycho, the artist’s own personality is also expressed out.

The last decade of the 20th-century is the second period of Chao Ge’s creativities. During the period when the whole country entered into a society of consumerism, the societal value system was undergoing a subversive change, and the same case in the arts. Many artists of that period began to reveal their emotional sufferings and discontent to the outside world through art. The outcome led to the birth of diverse expressions and styles by different artists. Some artists were trapped into a very individualistic and emotional expression and went into an extremity. They adopted“Pop Art”to deconstruct history, especially the leading ideology that has played a key role and dominated the Chinese society for long. However, some others created their works from the perspective of social criticism on the relationship between human, society and history. Chao Ge was among them. In his figure works titled “The Sensitive Man”,“The Western Part”,“Two People”and others, the oppressed emotion was converted into visual images, and the figures in his work usually lean to the viewer, like watching an object from an eye-close distance with a striking perspective. The figures look unease and anxiety, even a bit nervous. A blend of subjective colors and abstractive lines and strokes brings to the viewers about the moment feelings of the artist towards the time and social environment in which he lives. His work in that period was full of psychological conflicts, which might be viewed as a collective self-portrait of Chinese intellectuals being excluded or suffering in a spiritual dilemma from the societal reform. The figures in his work are kept a distance from their surroundings, which might either mean that they contemplate heavily, debate or deny; or that they feel lonely and exclusive of the outside world.

In his early ages of art practice, Chao Ge was indulged in the ancient Egyptian art, the medieval and the early Renaissance art. In the year of 2000, his visit to ten European countries has made him to rethink European art, especially through his emotional experiences of its origin. Standing in front of the heritage of the European visual civilization, he has felt “a forceful and dynamic power”, cognized the meaning of perpetuity and symbol. However, the visual expressions embedded in the Egyptian art have evoked him a sense of shocking and respect. Standing in front of the ancient master works of human civilization has made him to rethink“the relationship in general in arts, e.g., the relationship between Egyptian and Greek art; the comparison of the ancient Greek art to other European art; even the characteristics of Tigris and Euphrates’ art”; the relationship between traditional and modern art. Chao Ge’s love for the art of the naive period in essence corresponds to his continuous exploration on the essential issues of painting, in particular of the ones related to human beings’ spirituality. History always continues to give a birth to new things after cleaning dusty particles. Spirituality is always historical, and only spirituality is able to interpret history. To see a certain thing in existence should go beyond its simple surface. This thing now exists, existed in the past, and will still exist in the future. The thing attached to one’s soul is a hope or a faith, which includes good will, belief of love as well as pursuit for truth, justice and equity. In Chao Ge’s spiritual world, his faith as such has made him to find a new standpoint, from where he progresses. Any materialistic form will disappear in the physical world, only faith itself driven by spirituality can connect the past to the present, to the future.

During his visit to Europe, Chao Ge paid more attention to mural painting and architecture there and felt“the simple and dynamic power”out of the ancient art, especially the noble spirituality embedded in the European classical paintings. This led him give up the very individualistic and emotional form of expression he has adopted since the 1990s, and turned to explore more common issues related to human beings’spirituality. The turn was evident in his change of media in his painting. Since 1998, Chao Ge gave up oil media and started to use tempera technique. This classical painting technique better presents graphics of European ancient fresco and a sense of historical heaviness. Compared to the characteristics of oil media such as fine closeness and distance, smoothness and true color tune on canvas, tempera lowers chroma on canvas, evoking a physical quality of relief. Its visual effect is more delicate with a seemingly breathing sense. Through constant practices, Chao Ge’s painting gradually reached a state of being “unified, rhythmic and harmonious”. His subject matter shows a cautious, elegant and quiet face, the color in his painting became more delicate, giving the viewer a feeling of concentration and mindful peace. At present, his painting process is no longer intended to reveal his emotion, rather, to inject one’s feeling gradually onto canvas with an attempt to form a real visual link between a simple language in painting and pure spirituality.

In my regard, facing the diversity of Chinese contemporary art expressions as such and its increasing similarity in terms of the international art situations for today, the meaning of Chao Ge’s art is of great importance in two points. One is that he still pays respect to painting and believes that painting as an art language with a long history of human beings owns its never-ending vitality. What artists need to do today is how to “realize the respectful characteristic of some painting in the long past”. In today’s popular use of a great variety of medium, image making in visual art is increasingly conducted by appropriation, collage, and duplication. The value of art to human beings is gradually popularized by the mass culture, or is even replaced by philistine expressions. This kind of danger in terms of human beings’ civilization process is indeed a reality. In this aspect, Chao Ge has got a clear mind. He commits himself to the “new painting”, which shows his responsible attitude as an intellectual and artist. It also enables us to contemplate on how to“revive”a master form of art in today’s cultural context. The other point is that he does believe not only in painting, but also in spirituality. In particular, he is a faith keeper out of his sensitiveness and belief with an artist background. After his thinking and experiences from art making, he once made a very vivid and incisive metaphor: some art work belong to“the retina art”, e.g., since oil painting technique became mature in Europe, it was increasingly turned into a form of mimic towards nature,“if oil painting were depicted as retina, the painted images are reflections of nature out of one’s transparent crystal eyeballs”. To analyze contemporary art from this perspective, Chao Ge regards very emotional and candid expressions by individual artists and art trends presenting new media as a symbol of revolution as a“smooth and artificial surface people have used to visually in a time of post-industrialization and urbanism”.“But my art goes in opposite with an attempt to discover those characteristics of transcending time out of ancient art work”.“What I endeavor to achieve is not to produce things of the same value in the temporal world, but to create something in common with an insightful value. I have focused my attention on human beings’ history in general to obtain something valuable in my regard”. Facing the social and cultural psycho of today’s popular rash, Chao Ge’s “faith”is obviously like a weak sound, but is firm and penetrative. In the context of Chinese contemporary art, his unique experience and contemplation on human, humanity and value are without any doubt a representation of art being“individualistic”and“contemporary”.

For the past couple of years of the 21st-century, Chao Ge’s painting has showcased a consistency through inner power and visual communication. The visual images have become one or another spiritual images. He still depicts figure and landscape as his subject matter. Although the figure still comes from the grassland or lives in cities; and the landscape is still about the grassland or cities, the figure’s identity is no long a focus he portrayed; the figure stands there never leaning but with a peaceful and elegant face. It is difficult for us to read the real meaning out of their facial expressions. However, we can feel the permanence of spirit and a sense of historical heaviness out of the relief-style mural painting. What we have seen in his paintings is not only an existence of an individualized character, but is also the character as such full of common spirituality of human beings. This is very different from Chao Ge’s work of 1990s. Although the subject matter were all about portrait in a realist style, what has been reflected on is two diverse psycho situations seen through its composition, color, painting expression and emotion on canvas. The change from expressing one’s individualistic and moment emotion to concentration on feelings on canvas is a process to see the artist himself from uncertainty, debate and contradiction to irresistible and undoubted pursuit for faith.

In this world there is such a kind of people, who use their great souls and truthful ethics to cognize this world, in the meanwhile, they represent their own faith and emotion by rational thinking. This kind of thinking mode enables their mind to cast off the bondages, to stand at a higher position, over viewing the buckish world. When an artist portrayed his subject matter not only by eyes, but also by emotion and rationality, the scenery of the world in existence might evoke the light of freedom. Chao Ge’s art is just like what he said:“a kind of warm art with a hope for humanity included in the background.”
