从小用毛笔写字,熟悉张叔言的人都知道，他是用毛笔写字的。张叔言从小学直到退休都坚持用毛笔写字，写日记、写文章甚至连开会记录有时都用毛笔，不过那只是写毛笔字而已，谈不上书法。但无心插柳柳成荫，这种书写方法对毛笔的把握、书法的感觉很有帮助，特别对草书的流利性要求更是打下了一个基础。退休后，张叔言在与中国当代著名书画大家杨向阳的接触中感受到了书法的巨大魅力。“他的书法造诣和理论高度都让我十分钦佩，独创了融隶书风骨、魏碑气势、篆书神韵于一体的‘三体书’及草篆、行隶等近百种书体。当时我就临摹他的隶、楷、行书，受他的影响很深。”从此，张叔言开始临摹历代书法名家的字帖，沉浸其中，忘乎所以，甚至不吃不喝8个小时，从晚上一直写到凌晨3点都丝毫不疲惫。
